Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular calls from the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
