The Former President's Framework of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's insatiable desire for retribution has quickly morphed into a methodical system. Over the past year, the president's anger and caprices have taken on the guise of official policies in ways analogous to earlier dictatorial governments. Federal personnel who resist his demands are summarily dismissed and replaced by devotees. Political leaders who challenge him risk indictment, judicial process and penalties. Critics have been labeled under executive directives as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “against free markets”, and threatened with legal action as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Remade

Each case involving legal action of Trump's enemies and protection for loyalists demonstrates its own distinct features. But, notwithstanding their individual character, they exemplify expressions of what has emerged as a calculated method. Such events are not isolated. Trump's removal of federal attorneys and Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel, accompanied by his installation of loyalists in senior posts, started quickly, quickly took on a regularity, and has now been formed into a regime. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been transformed into political bodies under his clear command to execute his demands. Wrongdoing has been made routine. It represents the system of punishment.

Administration is focused with penalizing the chief's supposed adversaries than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Within the Apparatus

The foundation of this framework has been uncovered in the court filing of three ex- top Federal Bureau agents filed in September in the judicial system in Washington against FBI director an administration figure and top lawyer another official for illegal termination in “a initiative of payback against the officials for what Defendants considered to be a failure to demonstrate proper political loyalty”. In the complaint that one official, the former acting FBI director, describes a discussion in which Patel “publicly acknowledged the illegality of his behavior”.

He had sought to protect FBI agents from being fired, the complaint states. Patel advised him that “they” – understood by him to be the executive branch and DoJ – had ordered him to remove everyone who they identified as having been involved in a criminal investigation against the president. The complaint goes on: “He explained that he had to dismiss the individuals his bosses told him to remove, because his chance to retain his own role was contingent on the ouster of the agents who handled investigations involving the chief executive. The director noted that there was nothing he or Driscoll could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the bureau sought to place the chief in jail and he remembers.’” When he informed the director he was violating the bureau's own regulations, Patel allegedly said “he understood that and he realized the essence of the summary firings were almost certainly improper”.

Extensive Impact

Following his reported acknowledgment to the official, the justice department and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and repurposed for Trump's retribution system. Several of the FBI's senior executives were dismissed or forced out in the first days of the government. About thousands of professional attorneys at the department have taken a “deferred resignation program”. No fewer than multiple federal prosecutors, including those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in dissent over what they considered as ideological pressure in withdrawing the legal action against the city leader, the mayor, in exchange for his cooperation with the administration's ICE detentions of foreign nationals. The anti-corruption unit of DoJ, which manages misconduct investigations, has been cut down to two attorneys. The rights protection unit has been decimated: 70% of its personnel has resigned. One-third of executives at DoJ have left. The unit upholding environmental law has lost half its management.

Favors and Sanctions

Regarding the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, the official, quit in protest against what she described as the “quid pro quo”. A key figure, the president's “border czar,” was present as the implementer with Adams on Fox News to declare: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Meanwhile, Emil Bove, formerly the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who arranged the deal, was given an court role, a possible pathway to the supreme court.

Trump's immunity for crimes perpetrated while in office, awarded by the unprecedented judgment of the GOP-led on the supreme court, thus thwarting his prosecution over the Capitol riot and maintaining his public standing for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he stands to protect his stalwarts. Given this protection, he has been freed to authorize wrongdoing. The effect of the supreme court decision saturates his administration and the Republican Party down to its bones. Trump v United States has metastasized. Similar to Richard Nixon's legal adviser he commented about the Watergate
