Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue
Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
