An individual who spiked candy with tranquilliser and provided them to youngsters at a youth camp in the region has confessed to sexual offences against two boys who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and an older person experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in July.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he was present at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

Yet, he denied one particular crime he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She said his targets were disadvantaged youngsters who were staying at a summer program which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the man had played this game with the boys "for many years", and children had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She said the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his family member had concerns in recently.

Mrs Prior KC added: "This year his stepchild had suspicions about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."

The prosecutor said items including lubricant, Vaseline and syringes were located, and his stepson contacted the authorities about his concerns.

She explained the defendant proceeded to engage in the "sweet game" with six children that time - that Saturday - and they were all ill the next day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she added.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was investigating the police response of the events.

The legal representative stated the children were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so the family member called the authorities a second time.

She said the man then conducted the "treat game" in a space of five youngsters.
