European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
