A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
